My Favorite Engagement Photos Shot in Asheville, NC
Every couple I photograph is different. Some have distinct poses in mind while others look to me as a professional to guide them on the best way to hold their arm or tilt their head. I’ve been a professional photographer for over 8 years and I have had the pleasure of working with many newly engaged couples in the Asheville and Western North Carolina area.
Each engagement photo shoot I conduct leaves a lasting impression on me and I am always grateful that these couples allow me to capture one of the most important moments in their relationship. Asheville and the entire Western North Carolina region is crammed with some of the most beautiful locations to get engaged and there are some “secret” spots I like to suggest to clients looking for the perfect engagement location.
I thought it would be fun to look back at some of the most memorable moments I’ve had shooting engagement photos thus far.
Looking Glass Falls
There’s nothing more romantic than kissing in front of a waterfall. Coming up from Florida, this newly engaged couple was looking to capture the beauty of North Carolina in their photographs. I loved how willing they were to get barefoot in chilly water to capture the perfect shot.
Located in Pisgah National Forest, Looking Glass Falls is a mesmerizing waterfall whether you visit in the summer or winter when the falls ice over and becomes a “looking glass”. One of the reasons I really love this spot is its accessibility; you can see the falls right from your car window.
The Biltmore
What a surprise! This extended family originally hired me to shoot their family photos at the famed Biltmore Estate. Halfway through our session, one of the partners took me aside and told me he was going to propose to his girlfriend and if I could capture the moment, surprising the rest of the family and catching some incredible reactions.
The Biltmore estate is one of the most popular places I have held engagement photo sessions. And it’s no surprise that it’s a favorite. With over 800 acres to photograph, including their trails, gardens, and conservatory, it’s a photographer’s dream.
Elk Mountain Highway
I’ve got to admit, I’m an absolute sucker for hidden engagement photos simply because it allows the couple to be completely in the moment and I get to live out my James Bond dreams for a little bit. One of my favorite local spots to shoot is a small little trail on the Elk Mountain Highway Loop that runs through town.
Be warned, there is poison ivy in the area. I sadly found myself itching like crazy when I got back home to edit the photos, but with a shot like this, it was totally worth it.
Black Balsam Knob
This engagement photo session stuck out to me simply because of how excited the couple was to take some photos and have fun at Black Balsam Knob. This couple came to me without previous pose experience, however they nailed it with a bit of encouragement and coaching on my end. I love being able to see the amount of confidence couples feel after a shoot, and this one is no exception.
Black Balsam Knob is located in the Pisgah National Forest near milepost 420 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The trail contains a multitude of different sceneries including balsam fir trees, sprawling wildflower meadows, and a rocky summit which allows 360-degree panoramas of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Lake Lure
This photoshoot on Lake Lure was one of the most fun experiences I have had during my photography career. One of the partners had asked me to take hidden photographs of their engagement. The kicker: the engagement was happening on a boat in the middle of Lake Lure.
To get the perfect shot I ended up renting my own boat and utilized a telephoto lens to grab the moment from a far. It’s a good thing I don’t get seasick!
These have only been a few of the standout engagement photography sessions I’ve taken throughout my photography career. Every couple I photograph has their own story and it’s my mission to help tell that story in a photograph. Want more information on how to turn your own love story into a masterpiece?
