What is an Elopement and Why You Should Hire a Photographer

Elopement, once a hush-hush and rushed affair, has evolved into a celebration of intimacy and love unbound by convention, turning it into a more popular style of getting hitched. In recent days, eloping has disregarded its secretive stereotype and for couples today, turned into a modern wedding ceremony that allows for more event freedom than a traditional wedding.

As a professional wedding photographer, I’ve seen my fair share of wedding ceremonies, including elopements, micro weddings, and large wedding ceremonies and have gotten the chance to really learn about the differences between traditional wedding ceremonies and elopements. In this guide, we delve into the essence of elopement and why your elopement day should include photography services.

What are the Differences Between an Elopement and Wedding?

Back in the 17th century, getting eloped was a heck of a lot different than getting married. Usually without parental consent, the soon-to-be-wed couple would secretly sneak off somewhere (usually a courthouse or Las Vegas), to marry.

Today, having an elopement is noted as a casual affair that involves either just the couple or a small gathering of close family and friends. The ceremony is minimal and because of this, focuses completely on the couple.

Cost

According to The Knot, elopements can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to $5,000, whereas weddings land in the ballpark of $30,000. However, these figures are subjective and can vary based on individual preferences and choices.

For example, an elopement at the Asheville courthouse will run you $50 (in cash only), offering a simple and budget-friendly option for couples seeking a no-frills ceremony. On the other hand, an elopement package at a luxurious venue like the Biltmore in Asheville starts at $4000 and doesn’t include any guests, providing a more extravagant but still intimate experience for those looking to splurge on their special day.

Venue

Elopement ceremonies can take place in a variety of settings. Unlike traditional weddings that often require large venues to accommodate a sizable guest list, elopements are more intimate and flexible, which means there is less restriction on settings.

Elopement ceremonies can be held in picturesque outdoor locations like parks, beaches, or mountaintops, offering a scenic backdrop for the ceremony. For instance, in Asheville, couples might opt to tie the knot on the breathtaking Blue Ridge Parkway, adding a touch of natural beauty to their special day.

Guest List

Elopements typically involve either just the couple or a small gathering of close family and friends. This intimate setting allows for a more personal and focused experience, with the ceremony centered entirely on the couple without the distractions of a large guest list or elaborate reception. With fewer guests to accommodate, couples have the freedom to choose non-traditional venues and create a more relaxed atmosphere.

Vendors

In terms of vendors, elopements often require fewer services compared to traditional weddings. While weddings may involve multiple vendors such as caterers, florists, photographers, and DJs, elopements can be more streamlined.

Couples may still opt for essential services like a photographer to capture their special moments or a florist for a bouquet, but the overall vendor selection is usually more minimalistic.

Where to Elope in Asheville

Asheville has no lack of beautiful spots to exchange your vows.

One of the most popular spots is the Blue Ridge Parkway. Couples can exchange vows against the backdrop of sweeping mountain ranges, creating a magical and unforgettable moment. It’s one of my personal favorites to shoot elopements due to its sheer magicness.

For those seeking a more intimate and secluded elopement experience, Asheville's numerous parks and gardens provide charming options. Places like the North Carolina Arboretum or the Botanical Gardens at Asheville offer lush greenery, blooming flowers, and peaceful surroundings ideal for a private ceremony. Other elopement venues include the Biltmore Estate, the Omni Grove Park Inn, and Chimney State Park.
