How to Pose Naturally for Engagement Photos
Get cheesy! There’s nothing worse than feeling awkward during your photo session, especially if it’s your engagement photo shoot. Engagement photos are not just images; they are a celebration of your love story, marking the start of a lifelong adventure together. Understanding how to pose naturally can transform these photos from simple snapshots into true reflections of your relationship.
Unless you and your partner are professional models, most couples don’t have a lot of experience posing in front of a camera, myself included! And that’s okay. It’s my job to make sure you are comfortable and having fun. Over the years I’ve been able to put together some helpful tips on the best ways to pose naturally for your engagement photos.
How to Relax in Front of the Camera
Having someone take hundreds of photos of you can seem completely overwhelming, especially if it is your first time working with a professional photographer. To help get you started, I like to start each photography session with a few relaxation techniques, including asking each couple about their likes and dislikes as well as some icebreaker questions to figure out if there are any expectations during the session that we can work on together.
Still nervous? Try to focus on your partner and how happy they make you feel. Don’t be afraid to talk or joke during the session. It’s all about having fun and showing off your most authentic self. It’s okay to be silly!
The Basics of Posing
The foundation of a great photo lies in how you stand, sit, or interact with each other. Proper posture is important, which helps build automatic confidence. During the session I’ll guide you on how to act, whether it's walking while holding hands, posing directly for the camera, or posing towards each other.
4 Basic Engagement Photo Poses
Understand these and your session will feel more comfortable than ever.
Side by Side
There are many different variations to this pose but at its core, you and your partner stand side by side either looking directly at the camera or eachother.
This example shows a couple walking side by side in front of the Biltmore Estate. Notice their swinging arms? They were joking the entire time they were walking towards me and I was able to capture this gem.
Facing each other
Forget about me and focus on your partner with this pose. I’ll guide you on where to look and what to do, so all you need to focus on is each other.

Prom Pose
Bring it back to 1999 (or whatever year you attended your prom) and have some fun with this pose. The prom pose can sometimes be stiff, so make it your own and have some fun!
I altered this traditional photo with this couple who opted to change the pose to a piggyback ride.
Movement
Dance, walk, or even run together. Movement is one of my favorite things to photograph and really brings out the personality of each photograph.
This couple decided to dance to their favorite song while we were shooting on Max Patch.
Embracing Natural Movements and Expressions
The most memorable photos capture genuine emotions—those candid moments of laughter, tender glances, and spontaneous kisses. Share a joke, reminisce about a shared memory, or simply look into each other's eyes.
Don’t be afraid to talk to each other throughout the session and enjoy the space you are at.
As you prepare for your engagement session, remember the most important thing is to enjoy the process. These photos are about celebrating your love and the journey you're embarking on together. Embrace the moment, be yourselves, and let your natural connection shine through.
